Spotlight Interview – FUNSIES

WE ARE DELIGHTED YOU CHOSE TO BECOME A 2019 SL CHRISTMAS EXPO SPONSOR! WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY AND THE EXPO?

FUNSIES is a supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. We give 20%+ of our income to charities in the hopes that we can bring some love into the      world. Also, we appreciate that St. Jude’s cancer research is shared freely with others and very importantly the parents are never sent a bill for anything.

Cancer affects us all. I am a cancer survivor and my husband has suffered great loss when as a child his brother, aged 8, was diagnosed with Leukemia and passed a few years later. Cancer is something that needs to stop. We need to find cures.

This year I saw that the Christmas Expo was raising funds for VR for kids. How amazing is that? We knew we had to be a part of this year’s event. We had to do what we could to be even a small slice in a child’s joy somewhere this Christmas.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN SECOND LIFE?
Over 14 years

WHEN DID YOU OPEN YOUR BUSINESS?
2007

WHAT MADE YOU BECOME A VIRTUAL MERCHANT?
It’s kind of a long story, but explains it very well. A dear friend of mine was a Game Master from an online game we played. She knew about my creativity and computer skills. One day she mentioned Second Life and suggested I try it. I created an avatar and came in-world. However, the things I saw weren’t what I’d want to be around so I quickly left the game without another thought. I didn’t use the account again for a couple of years.

My friend convinced me to try again and said she’d show me how to find places better suited to my likes. So, I created Rebekah.

A friend in real life asked me what my greatest joy was in the world. I told her Jesus Christ as my saviour was number one and the ability to (finally) have children. My kids are a blessing and joy. My friend is my age and never married nor had children. She told me that she didn’t know the feeling, never would due to her hysterectomy at a young age, and she wished she could experience it. This led me to want to make a child for her and try to make a way that she could experience being a parent; even if just virtually.

After a lot of prayer for direction and Wisdom, I created what I called our cute “Ice Cream Cone” babies. The prims were so basic… spheres, cones, tubes.. lol. But the baby was cute and “felt” like a sweet angel. One day I had a real-life appointment so I asked my husband to watch our store which was known as ABC Maternity. When I came back, WOW! What a surprise! He’d created a Wall-E type robot. At the time our babies were static and just meant to be held. His ‘robot’ was able to wave, do voice commands and more… in only a few hours work! I asked him if he could do something with our babies, something to bring them to life, he worked hard for a few days and one day told me, “take a look!” My socks were thrown off! Not only was our baby now animated, it played peek-a-boo!!! I almost fell off my chair! No baby in SL was capable of this back in May 2007. He had truly brought the baby to life. With more work, tweaking and sculpts I’d done, we had our first animated baby!

TELL US WHAT INSPIRES YOUR CREATIONS?
We’re a real-life family business, just four us. Nothing big, pretty small, but tons of love! Our inspiration comes from seeing people happy. We love to help others, to bring joy and love into their lives. Life is very hard at times for us all, it can be very dark, but we want people to see that even in the midst of such darkness, there can be light.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN. REGARDING YOUR SL BUSINESS?
Too many things come to mind, really. However, I’d have to say it’s the words of my Dad when he was a computer programmer for the USAF back in the ’70s and I was just a little girl, “follow your dreams.”
