Spotlight Interview – The Citizens of Steelhead City

WE ARE DELIGHTED YOU CHOSE TO BECOME A 2019 SL CHRISTMAS EXPO LIGHTS OF HOPE SPONSOR! WHY DID YOU AND THE CITIZENS OF STEELHEAD CITY CHOOSE TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY AND THE EXPO?
A cause I truly believe in. The search for a cure for cancer.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN SECOND LIFE? WAS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR THAT MADE YOU JOIN
I joined Second Life in 2006 when an online friend was mentioning it in a Yahoo group that we were a part of. He described it as “The Sims on acid”, thought I’d join up and see what it was all about. The plan was to just check it out for a week or two, then move on. The name Fuzzball Ortega was chosen, because I’d figure it would be easy to forget after I left after a couple of weeks. Again, this was in 2006, and I’m still here.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT STEELHEAD CITY AND THE CITIZENS?
The original Steelhead City sim, and the group The Citizens Of Steelhead City, was formed in 2005. We kept our setting in the Pacific Northwest of the United States (Oregon, to be precise) during the mid to late 19th century. It took a bit of time to find our footing, so to speak. Western, Weird Wild West, Steampunk Western. We finally settled on the phrase coined by the creators of the Girl Genius web comic, Gaslamp Fantasy. The original Steelhead sims closed in 2015.

In 2017, I purchased a new sim, Steelhead Bay. Been a real struggle getting the sim built to where I’d like it. RL issues and all. But, we do have a few dance venues set up, our underwater venue (still needs more decorating), The Jolly Pidgeon (Yes, it’s spelled with a D in the name) for our pirate themed dances (also one of the few original Steelhead items in the sim), the outdoor stage (based off a prim heavy, ugly textured stage that I held the first Friday night dances in 2006) and Club Gearz (Gearz 3.0 to be precise).

There’s also our sister sim, Ravenwood Forest, owned by Willow Leafstorm

The citizens are a group of wonderful and creative people. Just the friendliest group of crazies that you’ll ever meet. There’s also our sea monster, Steely Dan who surfaces and checks out visitors on Lighthouse Island. Not an avatar, but fun to look at.

WHAT MADE YOU BECOME A RESIDENT OF STEELHEAD CITY? HAVE YOU BEEN THERE SINCE YOU STARTED SECOND LIFE?
I was made a resident by the original owner of Steelhead City from the day that I arrived in SL.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN. REGARDING SECOND LIFE?
Something I read on someone’s profile that I always keep in mind. Behind every pixel that makes an SL avatar, is a real human being. And keeping that in mind, I try to be as respectful to everyone as I can

EXPO VISITORS LIKE TO FOLLOW UP WITH OUR SPONSORS. DOES STEELHEAD CITY WELCOME VISITORS, AND IF SO, HOW DO THEY GET THERE, OR IS THERE A WEBSITE THEY CAN VISIT? Steelhead is always open to visitors. We enjoy making new friends, and hope that they’ll visit us more often. You’ll arrive at Lighthouse Island found at

Lighthouse Island

WHAT CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATION ARE YOU AND WHY?
I’m probably that one ornament the cat knocked down off the tree.

WHAT ONE WORD WOULD YOUR FRIENDS USE TO DESCRIBE YOU?

CAN YOU GIVE US A HINT AS TO WHAT WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2020 FROM STEELHEAD CITY AND ITS CITIZENS?
That…..would be spoiling things, now wouldn’t it.
